PRESENTATION COPY, BOLDLY INSCRIBED BY TRUMAN TO ATTORNEY GENERAL HOWARD MCGRATH (1903-1966) in blue ink on half-title: "To: Hon. Howard McGrath From: The President. White House, August 9 1952." With an additional Truman inscription on facing frontispiece portrait of Truman: "With continued friendship and high regard!" Rare. Only two other special copies of this important collection of Truman memoranda and other documents have been offered at auction in recent years: the copy inscribed to Vice President Alben Barkley (in 1989, $8,500) and another inscribed to Secretary of Commerce Harriman (1997, $3,000). Despite the warmth of Truman's inscription, his relationship with McGrath, a high-ranking Democrat from Rhode Island, was a rocky one; the same year as this gift, Truman fired McGrath in a dispute over the investigation of a scandal involving the Internal Revenue Service.
