The Last Chronicle of Barset. London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1866-67. 32 parts (2 volumes). 8vo (216 x 135 mm). With 32 wood-engraved plates and 32 initial vignettes by G.H. Thomas. Original pictorial cream wrappers printed in red and blue. Mild soiling to backstrips and wrappers of first 3 parts, small chip to backstrips of part 1, 14, 19 & 31-32, corners creased on part 32, overall quite fresh. Provenance: Oliver Brett, later Lord Esher (armorial bookplate on case). FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WEEKLY PARTS, THE ONLY WORK IN THE BARSETSHIRE NOVELS TO BE SERIALIZED. Advertisements conform to Sadleir except without 3 "non-compulsory" insets, including the extracts from Trollope in part 12 found in only one copy by Sadleir. The Barsetshire novels first brought Trollope authorial fame and financial security. This was the final of the six Barsetshire novels, and Trollope considered this the best novel he wrote.
