(illustrated) Catalogue Essay Since 1996, the artistic duo Tim Noble & Sue Webster have eagerly pursued in one series an agenda of celebrating the utmost in kitsch, sensational, and gaudy. Noble & Webster, in essence, memorialize through their affectionately glaring neon light displays, the physical energy and lifeblood of Las Vegas. YE$, a work from 2001, immortalizes the very heart and soul of Las Vegas’- drawing front and center the U.S. dollar symbol in a fanfare, stylistic spectacle, all for the sake of revealing that which is at the core of this American city renowned for vulgar displays of wealth, and for the means in obtaining this wealth in the first place. YE$ is a stunning in it’s effective simplicity: bold, daring and evocative, the sculpture possesses that which makes Las Vegas tick: the artists demonstrate an uncanny ability, especially for non-natives, to distill the aesthetic of the city. What is more, this clambering for bold expression is also a central element to their artistic core, an audacious thread that has garnered them fame throughout their career. Read More
