Address'd to the Right Reverend the Lord Bishop of Bangor. [14], 5-74 + [2] ad pp. Copper-engraved frontispiece portrait of Lord Bangor by Vander Gucht. 1st Ed. London: E. Curll, 1718. [bound with] Pope, Alexander. The Rape of the Lock. An Heroi-Comical Poem. In Five Cantos. [8], 48 pp. With 6 copper-engraved plates by C. Du Bose after Lud. Du Guernier. 1st Separate Ed. London: Bernard Lintott, 1714. [bound with] Barnivelt, Esdras [i.e. Alexander Pope]. A Key to the Lock. Or, A Treatise, proving, beyond all Contradiction, the dangerous Tendency of a late Poem, entituled, The Rape of the Lock, to Government and Religion. 32 pp. London: J. Roberts, 1715. [bound with] Tassoni, Alessandro. La Secchia Rapita: The Trophy-Bucket. A Mock-Heroic Poem, the First of Its Kind…. Done from the Italian into English Rhime, by Mr. Ozell. [3]-58 pp. Copper-engraved frontispiece. 1st Ed. in English? London: J.D. for Egbert Sanger, 1710. Together 4 works bound together. (8vo) 7½x4¼, old calf. Pope's The Rape of the Lock is the first separate edition, and the first edition in the enlarge five-canto form; it first appeared in "Miscellaneous poems and translations, by several hands," published by Lintott in 1712. With the small leather booklabel of Peter Murray Hill on front pastedown. Lot Amendments Condition: Covers worn, front detached; some aging and soiling within, frontispiece of the Lock with verso soiled, some darkening; final work lacking first leaf (half-title?), also last five leaves badly chipped with considerable loss, additional leaves at end apparently lacking; however, The Rape of the Lock is quite a nice example of the rare first separate, and first expanded, edition.
