THOREAU, Henry David (1817-1862). A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers . Boston and Cambridge: James Munroe; New York: George P. Putnam; Philadelphia: Lindsay and Blackiston; London: John Chapman 1849. 8 o . One-page advertisement for Walden at end. Publisher's presentation binding of embossed black cloth, gilt-lettered on spine (ends of spine lightly chipped); cloth slipcase. Provenance : Francis Bowen (1811-1890), editor of the North American Review (presentation inscription from the publisher). FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING, FIRST ISSUE OF THE AUTHOR'S FIRST BOOK. PUBLISHER'S PRESENTATION COPY, IN A PRESENTATION BINDING, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Editor of the N.A. Review, from the Publishers." And with penciled corrections, presumably by the publisher, on pages 120 and 139. The North American Review , edited by the philosopher and educationalist Francis Bowen, was the country's most important intellectual magazine at the time. 1,000 sets of sheets of A Week were printed at Thoreau's expense in 1849. However, the book did not sell well, and on October 28, 1853, 706 copies were sent back to Thoreau where they would sit in his attic bedroom for the next nine years. Ticknor and Fields eventually bought the remaining bound copies and unbound sheets in 1862 for 40 cents apiece. BAL 20104; Borst A1.1.a1; Johnson High Spots 73.
