Theatrum orbis terrarum: opus nunc denuo ab ipso auctore recognitum, multisqué locis castigatum; & quamplurimis novis tabulis atquè commentarijs auctum. [Antwerp: ex officina Plantiniana, 1595.] Folio (450 x 300 mm). Opening fragment only of the atlas containing the first quire A6, B1, and two map sheets. Engraved title page, and two maps as follows: Americae sive novi orbis, nova descriptio. Antwerp: 1587. Copper engraved map. 490 x 360. Small repair to center seam at lower margin, else fine. Maris pacifici (quod vulgo Mar del Zur)…. Antwerp: 1589. Copper engraved map. (500 x 345 mm). Wide margins. Excellent condition. Engraved title page spotted and soiled, ex libris inscription to A2r, additional manuscript encomium of Nicholas Rhedinger, praising Ortelius as Father of the World to A1v, light spotting to opening text leaves, wide margins, with typescript key to Introduction and Catalogue of Geographers. A well preserved opening fragment from Ortelius’ 1595 atlas of the world, with two of the most desirable maps from that edition in pristine state. See illustration.
