Title: The Uncollected Fictional Works Author: McMurtry, Larry Place: Thalia Texas Publisher: Privately printed Date: 1979 Description: Original green wrappers, with 20 text leaves (with some illustrations) laid in loose. Title page and colophon in photocopy; housed in blue cloth clamshell box with morocco spine label lettered in gilt. One of 35 copies printed. The text consists of three stories and two poems taken from the uncopyrighted 1956-7 college literary magazine of North Texas State University, AVESTA: "Roll Jordan, Roll." The Best Day Since," "Cowman," and the poems "Quietus" and "Yes, I am Old." This pamphlet was the project of two well meaning fellows whose motivation was pure homage. Four copies were sent to McMurtry, who claimed copyright, and demanded all copies be destroyed or sent to him. The publishers made an attempt to recall the few copies in circulation. The title page and colophon leaves from the returned copies were sent to McMurtry and the texts sheets were (supposedly) destroyed. The present copy has the title page and colophon page in photo-copy;the wrappers and texts pages are original. This copy o accompanied by a photocopied four page statement buy the publisher, explaining the history of this publication. Fifteen years later, McMurtry was perturbed to see this unauthorized printing appearing in the rare book market and published a letter erroneously calling it a piracy, a claim he later retracted when it was pointed out that the students stories had been deliberately published without copyright in the hopes they would be reprinted and bring their (then-unknown) authors fame, Also included are copies of McMurtry's letter and retraction, two copyright circulars form the library of congress, and a copy of the Copyright office report showing these works to be in the public domain. Lot Amendments Condition: Light wear and scuffing to outer box; wrappers with a bit of toning and wear to edges; text sheets fine. Item number: 297598
