The Sportsman's Pocket Companion, being a striking likeness or portraiture of the most eminent race horses and stallions, that ever were in this kingdom, represented in a variety of attitudes ... Drawn by James Roberts and engraved by Henry Roberts . London: ?1760.]. 8 (228 x 142mm). 40 engraved plates, each with portrait of a thoroughbred and a record of its wins, some plates with a vignette at foot, engraved index leaf. (Lacking title, plates laid down on old paper, index leaf laid down on verso of final plate, some soiling and staining, at times heavy, a few plates with touches of crude hand-colouring, one or two plates affected by pen trials, repaired tears, plate 21 with open tear affecting vignette, final two plates torn with some loss.) Contemporary half calf and marbled boards. This all-engraved work is unquestionably rare. ESTC records two issues, one published and sold by Henry Roberts the other printed for R. and R. Baldwin: just one location is given for the first issue (Winterthur Museum Library), and one for the second (BL). Huth records the work under a variant title, and also notes that there was an 1820 edition. The thoroughbreds depicted were actually running from the 1720s to 1750s. The owner's name is recorded, and an appraisal of each horse's qualities is followed by its race record. Huth p. 38.
