The historic Porsche RSR Carrera Coupe requires little introduction to such an experienced market. Amongst this most thrilling, attractive and today still widely useable series of competition cars this particular example – chassis ‘9121’ – is one of the last ‘customer’ 3.0 RSRs manufactured by Porsche for the 1975 racing season. There is a letter to a former owner, Mr Robert J. Luth of Darien, CT, dated November 10, 1983, in which the respected authority Jurgen Barth – of the Porsche factory’s Sport Department – writes: “As to your 1975 RSR serial 9115609121 we searched in our files and can now give you the following information. The car was first delivered to Hartwig Bertrams. He most probably won the GT European Championship with this car.” This letter also states that the car was fitted originally with engine no. 784 0167. Correspondence within the accompanying file between Mike Amalfitano and Porsche historian John Starkey lists delivery of ‘9121’ offered here to Hartwig Bertrams of Adler, Germany, followed by its competition history with the Tebernum Team in 1975, as follows: March 23 – Mugello 1,000Kms, Italy – Hartwig Bertrams/Clemens Schickentanz/Reine Wisell – 2nd GT, 12th overall March 29 – ADAC 300kms Nürburgring, Germany – Hartwig Bertrams – 2nd GT, 6th overall April 6 – Dijon 800Kms, France - Hartwig Bertrams/Clemens Schickentanz/Reine Wisell - 2nd GT, 7th overall April 13 – Imola, Italy – Hartwig Bertrams – Disqualified (5th) April 20 – Monza 1,000Kms, Italy - Hartwig Bertrams/Clemens Schickentanz/Reine Wisell - 9th overall April 27 – EifelRennen, Nürburgring, Germany – Clemens Schickentanz – 2nd May 4 – Spa 750Kms, Belgium - Hartwig Bertrams/Clemens Schickentanz /Reine Wisell - 3rd GT, 6th overall May 18 – Enna Coppa Florio 1,000Kms, Sicily - Hartwig Bertrams/Clemens Schickentanz /Reine Wisell - 1st GT, 4th overall (or possibly 2nd GT, 5th overall – same three drivers shared two Tebernum Team RSRs which finished in these positions) May 25 – Osterreichring, Austria - Clemens Schickentanz – 1st June 1 – ADAC Nürburgring 1,000Kms, Germany - Hartwig Bertrams/Clemens Schickentanz/Reine Wisell - DNF June 8 – Hockenheimring, Germany - Clemens Schickentanz – DNF June 15-16 – Le Mans 24-Hours, France - Hartwig Bertrams/Clemens Schickentanz – DNF (entered by Joest Racing Team) July 20 – Sudwest Pokalrennen, Hockenheim, Germany - Clemens Schickentanz – 6th August 3 – Misano-Adriatico, Italy - Clemens Schickentanz – 7th August 17 – Kassel-Calden, Germany - Clemens Schickentanz – 4th November 2 – Jarama 200Kms, Spain - Clemens Schickentanz – DNF We understand that for the 1976 racing season the Tebernum Team combined with Georg Loos’ Gelo Racing organization. Unfortunately accurate records do not exist to establish the individual chassis histories of the Gelo Racing Team RSRs, of which there were several. However, it is likely that this RSR was raced under the Gelo banner subsequent to the consolidation of the two racing teams. This well raced and very successful Porsche 911 RSR was subsequently sold to the United States and in the early 1980’s was obtained by respected specialist Ron Armour of Orange, California. A complete restoration was undertaken by Mr Armour with careful attention to the original RSR body panels. Work was completed in time for this famous RSR to compete in the 9th Annual Monterey Historic Automobile Races of which Porsche was the featured marque. As the only 911 RSR to be accepted, both the RSR and Mr. Armour performed well, especially considering the caliber of the cars in the run group. Eventually the RSR was sold to Mr Bob Luth. The car was then acquired from Mr Luth by the late Michael Amalfitano in February 2002. Documentation is also preserved within the file accompanying this Lot recording engine work carried out by Andial Road & Racing of Santa Ana, California, during 1995, for which the bill totalled some $20,725. An FIA Historic Vehicle Identity Form is also offered, issued to the Amalfitano
