[iii]-xxiii, 417; xv, 399 pp. With 70 (of 72) hand-colored aquatint plates and numerous woodcuts mostly by Robert Cruikshank plus some by Rowlandson, Gillray, Finlay, etc. 9x5½, later half calf and cloth, spines lettered in gilt, hinges reinforced with cloth. First Edition. Important work with extraordinary scenes, presenting images of life in England and the fashionable society of London, etc. during the early nineteenth century. Views including interesting characters and celebrities of the day (often in humorous situations), including: George IV and his favorite sultana the Marchioness of Conyngham, the Princess Augusta, Charles Kemble, Lord William Lennox and others. Volume I title page and 2 color plates no present. Abbey Life 325; Tooley 504. Engraved bookplate of James McDonald in each. Lot Amendments Condition: Scuffs to leather, shelf wear, cloth fading; rear joints splitting; hinges cracking, marginal repairs and/or frays to about 6 or so leaves (chiefly at front and rear), several plates bound out of order and with small tears; else good to very good.
