Beschreibung:

The Douglas-Morris Collection of Naval Medals Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, no clasp (J. H. Pinhey, Ch. Sto., H.M.S. Blanche) good very fine Footnote 155 medals to this ship. John Henry Penny (alian Pinhey) was born on 1 March 1861 in Plymouth, Devon. He earned his living as a labourer before joining the service as a Stoker 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. INDUS on 16 January 1882. He was pensioned ashore on 24 February 1902 having completed 20 years service, and despite having received ‘very good’ character ratings for over 15 years, his service record does not show the award of a Long Service & Good Conduct Medal. He joined Devonport Royal Fleet Reserve on 25 February 1902 and was discharged from the R.F.R. on 1 March 1911, having reached 50 years of age. Despite being nearly 55 years of age he was recalled for service in August 1914 and served until 16 June 1919 when he was demobilised.
