The Douglas-Morris Collection of Naval Medals Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, no clasp (W. Privett, Lamptr. H.M.S. Euphrates) edge bruise and pitting, otherwise very fine Footnote Walter Privett was born in Forton, Hants, on 31 May 1861 and joined the service as a Lamptrimmer aboard H.M.S. DUKE OF WELLINGTON on 31 October 1879. He was subsequently drafted to EUPHRATES on 12 July 1882 to earn the Egypt medal without clasp, prior to being paid off in May 1883. Whilst still a Lamptrimmer he served aboard IRIS (1884-87) his request to change his branch was approved, when in March 1887 he became a Stoker 2nd Class aboard ASIA. He subsequently served aboard SULTAN (1887-89) where he was advanced to the rate of Stoker in October 1887, DREADNOUGHT (1890-94), ALEXANDRA (1894-97), VULCAN (1897-99) and MARS (1899-1901) where he received advancement to Leading Stoker 2nd Class in July 1899, and to Leading Stoker 1st Class in November 1900. He was pensioned to shore on 12 January 1902 but was made a Stoker (Pensioner) and a member of the Royal Navy Reserve. He was discharged from the Royal Navy to shore on 31 March 1903 and was discharged from the R.N.R. due to age on 30 May 1911. The loss of Good Conduct Badges in 1885 and 1887 made him ineligible for the L.S. & G.C. medal.
