The Douglas-Morris Collection of Naval Medals East and West Africa 1887-1900, 2 clasps, Witu 1890, Benin River 1894, edge additionally impressed ‘Mwele 1895’ (T. Morrison, Sto., H.M.S. Conquest) contact marks, therefore very fine and scarce Footnote Two medals with this combination to the ship. Thomas Morrison was born in Anbrook, Queenstown, Cork, on 5 April 1861. First entered as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. CAMBRIDGE on 6 February 1880, but opted to change his Branch, joining INDUS as a Stoker 2nd Class on 21 March 1882, and advanced to a Stoker 1st Class during July 1882. Subsequently served aboard H.M. Ships IRIS (1883-85), INDUS (1885-86), EGERIA (1886-88), CONQUEST (16 February 1889 to 11 May 1892) earning the first of his African awards, and PHOEBE (23 January 1893 to 21 January 1896) where he was present at Benin River in 1894 and Mwele in 1895. His last seagoing vessel was HOWE (1897-98), where he was advanced to Leading Stoker 2nd Class whilst on VIVID's books during December 1898. He was invalided from the service on 9 March 1900. He was called up for service in WW1 on 2 August 1914, but within three days was invalided back to civilian life, and never entitled to any medals. His service record carries the following entry: 12.6.1895 - "Imprisonment of 30 days awarded him. Is to be remitted on account of his meritorious service in the field, but reduction to 2nd Class for Conduct is to stand."
