Title: The Deserted Bride and Other Poems Author: Morris, George Pope Place: New York Publisher: Adlard & Saunders Date: 1838 Description: (8vo), original blind- and gilt-stamped blue-gray cloth (skillfully rebacked), gilt lettering. First Edition. BAL 14355; American Imprints 51776. Morris' first book, which includes his famous poem "The Oak," the first line of which is "Woodman, spare that tree!" See Merle Johnson, You Know These Lines, pages 120-121. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: “Hon. William T. McCoun [sp?] / Chancellor of the State of New York / with the profound esteem / and most respectful complements of / The Author.” Morris, an influential Knickerbocker literary figure, was the founder and editor of the New York Mirror, an early American literary magazine which encouraged and published the works of Bryant, Willis, Paulding, Fay (to whom this book is dedicated) and Halleck. Lot Amendments Condition: Twentieth century bookplate on front pastedown; very good. Item number: 254852a
