With engraved and photogravure illustrations throughout the set; frontispiece portrait in each, with tissue-guard; title page and initial letters (printed in three colors) designed by Dard Hunter 11¼x7½, publisher’s uniform half brown morocco & tan boards (a few are tan otherwise uniform), leather decoratively stamped in dark brown, spines tooled & lettered in gilt, raised bands, top edges gilt, other edge untrimmed, each with thin attached ribbon bookmark. Each No. 680 of 1000 sets. “Author’s Edition.” Each signed by Elbert Hubbard on the limitation page. Volume I includes a 3-page typed manuscript with penciled corrections and additions, (3 leaves with nail through top corner), inside original printed folder, laid in. The final volume, not present here, was published in 1915, the same year when Hubbard was killed while aboard the RMS Lusitania, the British luxury ocean liner that was sunk by the German's during WWI, killing nearly 1200 people. The sinking turned public opinion in many countries against Germany. Lot Amendments Condition: Just slight shelf wear, a few with minor spots; light foxing to pages; still a near fine set, handsomely bound and produced by Hubbard’s Roycroft Shop. Item number: 185666
