The battle of Chios (5 t h July 1770): An eye-witness account of the campaign written by Thomas Howard Third Earl of Effingham A personal journal for part of the Russian campaign, writeen between the dates April 13 t h 1770 and February 18 t h 1771, the title page entitled Effingham 1770 -- Journal of an Expedition with a Squadron of Rufsian Ships of War, up to the Straits. Under the Command of Rear Admiral Elphinston.-- begun -- April, 13 t h 1770. Including details of participating ships, navigational positions, actions and social anecdotes, written in a fair hand with days divided by a line across the page: [5 t h July 1770] "...Enemy are still at anchor...at 8 h15 I distinguish Enemy 3 Flags at...they have their [Battle] Colours Hoisted, at 8 h22. Signald Admiral for Line of Battle, we being before the mouth of Bay dist h. a ltle more than a league...10 h. we observed Admiral Spititoff's Squadron bearing down on the Enemy & immediatley after Adm rl E. coing on Board. By this manouvour I suppose we are to attack them in our stations, or to Anchor out of Gun Shot & Bombard them. 11 h the Headmast Ships began to Engage & we made all Sail Pofsible at 12 h.10. The Enemy began to fire on us, at 12 h.20. We return'd it. At 12.41 Observed [colours?] of a Turk Adm l on Board of each 'tiller?], Soonafter a Smoke broke out of Turks Starboard Quarter Soonafter, one of them blew up.... Bound betwen leather covered boards with remains of paper label attached to spine -- 8 x 5½in. (20.2 x 14.2cm.) See illustration
