Dorothy Stanley's personal archive of material relating to the Autobiography , comprising: H.M. STANLEY. The Autobiography . Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1909. 8°. Photogravure portrait frontispiece and plates, facsimile plate, and folding colour-printed map. (Light dampstaining to upper portion of leaves.) Original red cloth gilt, t.e.g. (upper hinge split). Provenance : 'Dorothy Stanley. , (My own particular copy - D.S.) , October 29th 1909-' (inscription on upper pastedown). FIRST EDITION. DOROTHY STANLEY'S COPY with occasional annotations in her hand and a loosly-inserted autograph 7-page manuscript [?of an introduction to a later edition], enlarged by the insertion of additional material from later editions, and typewritten and carbon copy notes, including a transcript of H.W. Cook's account of his journey through Asia Minor with Stanley. A collection of corrected and/or annotated proofs of the title-page, errata slip, publisher's advertisement, photogravure plates, some original photographs from which the plates were taken, manuscript and typewritten transcriptions of correspondence, typescripts and carbon copies of typewritten drafts with annotations, and correspondence relating to the publication of the work, with an unrelated group of 9 printer's proofs of a woodcut copyright device designed for Cassell and Co. by Dorothy Stanley contained in an envelope. A publisher's prototype binding for the English edition, the upper cover blocked with a variant of the 'Bula-Matari' device used on the published English edition, the blank leaves of the volume with tipped-in and loosely-inserted press clippings, letters and notes in Dorothy Stanley's hand, photographs, and other items of ephemera, and a publisher's prototype of the case alone, with the 'Bula-Matari' design and title lettering on the spine and upper cover as they appear on the published volume. An album of press-clippings and reviews relating to The Autobiography , dated 1909-1910 and captioned in manuscript, 2° contemporary half morocco, the lower pastedown stamped 'Durrants. , Press Cuttings , 32-34, Holborn Viaduct. London' (boards dampmarked) together with H.M. STANLEY. The Autobiography . London: Sampson Low, Marston and Co. Ltd., 1909. 8°. Photogravure frontispiece portrait and plates, facsimile plate, folding colour-printed map. Original blue cloth gilt, dust-wrapper (dust-wrapper torn with losses).
