The most successful division of the Anglo-French Sunbeam-Talbot-Darracq combine, Talbot might well have escaped takeover by Rootes in 1935 had it not been shackled to its weaker partners. The company's then healthy position had been achieved by a succession of well-engineered products penned by its designer, Swiss-born Charles Roesch, whose obsession with the pursuit of high performance through increased engine revolutions led to some of the most memorable cars of the 1930s. Developed from the highly successful 14/45, the 2.3-litre '75' offered roomy, comfortable transport at a competitive price and, like all Roesch's Talbot creations, was powered by a smooth and flexible six-cylinder overhead-valve engine endowed with a remarkably high output for its size. The chassis was a substantial, X-braced affair featuring semi-elliptic front and quarter-elliptic rear springing, and equipped with effective brakes. Originally bodied as a saloon, this '75' wears four-seater tourer coachwork by Corsica. Based in Cricklewood, North London, Corsica was responsible for some of the 1930's most exciting designs, including the fabulous Daimler Double-Six Sports and Donald Healey's Triumph Dolomite eight-cylinder. Remarkably, 'BMW 512' has enjoyed just two owners from new, coming into the present owner's possession in 1974. Restored over time and presented in generally very good condition, the car benefits from recent refurbishment that included an engine rebuild, springs re-set and new cwp in 2003. As befits a model that excelled in the Coupe des Alpes, this '75' has been used extensively for historic rallies and other events over the past 25 years (a detailed list of which is provided) including trips to France, Ireland and Scandinavia. The latter region has been visited on no fewer than five occasions, earning this well known car its 'Arctic Talbot' soubriquet among STD enthusiasts. Finished in green with matching leather interior, this capable and proven Grand Routier is offered with sundry invoices, old-style logbook, current road fund licence/MoT and Swansea V5 registration document.
