His revision and translation of Antoine Galland's French Arabian Nights “constituted the first literary translation of the Arabian Nights, providing a critical introduction and copious annotation of the Muslim religion and customs.” (DNB) Intended for a general readership it proved extremely popular and remains a very readable edition of such tales as The Story of Sinbad and The Story of Alla Ad Deen or the Wonderful Lamp.
