Author: Callender, James Thomson Place: Philadelphia Publisher: Bioren & Madan Date: 1797 Description: vii, [1], 288 pp. (8vo) 22x13 cm (8¾x5½"), bound in quarter calf with marbled boards, spine ruled in gilt, black morocco spine label with gilt title. First Edition. Callender has been called "the New Republic's most notorious scandalmonger", and is best known as the journalist who first published the story that Thomas Jefferson had a decades-long affair with his slave Sally Hemings, who was his deceased wife's half sister. Howes C69, Evans 31905. Lot Amendments Condition: Wear and rubbing to binding, rubbing to extremities; small piece missing from inner bottom corner of front pastedown page and free endpaper, pencil notes on front pastedown page, light scattered foxing, slight darkening to text block, small piece missing from bottom of last page, a few minor tears to page edges; overall very good.
