Place: Washington Publisher: Government Printing Office Date: 1882 Description: Text volume: [2], xiv, 264 pp. Illustrated with 2 chromolithograph views after W.H. Holmes, 4 heliotype plates after photographs, and 36 other plates including a color double-page map, many other double-page charts, and views after Thomas Moran and H.H. Nichols. 11½x9, original brown cloth. Atlas Volume: Title-page, contents list, & 22 double-page plates, including color lithographed maps, lithographs of the canyon by W.H. Holmes, a striking chromolithograph by Thomas Moran etc. 20x17¼, original gilt-lettered cloth, rebacked, housed in a custom slipcase. A magnificent collection of maps and views that has elicited superlatives from every critic, and is certainly worthy of Francis Farquhar's description of it as "one of the greatest if not the greatest of all Grand Canyon books." Lot Amendments Condition: Text volume lacking backstrip, cloth heavily spotted, hinges cracked; dampstain in top margin of a few leaves at front and rear; a few plates with spots of tissue adhesion; overall good or better. Atlas volume rebacked, edges worn; sheets XV and XVIII (Moran Plate) each with small adhesion spots on both halves of folding sheets; Overall a clean and very good copy. Item number: 180064
