'TEDDY' THE GREAT DANE DOG COLLAR Circa 1910s A huge brown leather dog collar adorned with circular brass studs and turquoise-and-pearlized-type stones worn by the canine actor, Teddy; a Great Dane often seen in early Mack Sennett Comedies alongside stars such as Mabel Normand and Louise Fazenda; this piece has a brass placard affixed to the middle engraved "Presented to/Teddy/By his Keystone Admirers/Owner/Joe Simkins" ('Keystone' being the production company Sennett founded in 1912). According to a 1956 newspaper clipping, "the most revered canine star was the great dane [sic] Teddy, Mack Sennett's pride and joy...for nine years he ruled the screen...(and) on his fifth birthday the entire roster of Sennett comedies chipped in and gave Teddy a new harness and collar that cost hundreds of dollars;" that collar now being sold in this lot. Included are four newspaper clippings mentioning Teddy, three vintage black and white photographs signed on Teddy's behalf by Simkins (two of which show Teddy wearing this special collar), six small black and white snapshots of Teddy with Simkins and one vintage calling card featuring an image of Teddy (wearing the collar) above a poem. Length: 24 inches Please note that a number of stones are now missing and the leather is heavily worn due to age and use.
