Taylor, ZacharyManuscript letter signed ("Z-Taylor") to Major General Thomas Jesup, referencing a field report, Fort Basinger, 28 January 1838 1 page (220 x 205 mm). Accomplished in a secretarial hand, ruled paper; old folds, burn hole repaired with paper, a few stray spots. (Aforementioned field report not present). "I have the honor to enclose herewith, a Field report of the Troops under my command at this Post..." The present letter was written shortly after the Battle of Lake Okeechobee—one of the most significant battles of the Second Seminole War. It was fought between 800 troops under the command of Taylor, and between 380 and 480 Seminoles led by Billy Bowlegs, Abiaca, and Halpatter Tustenuggee (Alligator), on 25 December 1837. Both the Seminoles and Taylor's troops emerged from the battle claiming victory, and Taylor was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General soon thereafter.Condition reportCondition as described in catalogue entry.
