(29.5 cm) high, 7 1/2 in. (19 cm) wide. -- Playing Card Tax Document, London, May 9, 1828, 20 pages. Act by King George IV of Great Britain to repeal the existing tax on playing cards and dice and to establish a new tax of one shilling on every pack made for sale or use in the United Kingdom, including appropriate mark to appear on the ace of spades, and instituted payment of five shillings for an annual license to manufacture playing cards with severe penalties for failure to comply. Size 12 in. (30.5 cm) high, 7 1/2 in. (19 cm) wide. Some of the earliest extant references to playing cards are decrees, prohibitions, treatises and poems. The regulation, licensing and taxation on the production and import/export of playing cards was commonplace in various European countries including England, France, Italy, Portugal, Austria and Germany.
