"If a man's horse has lost his tail, why should he sell him wholesale?" "It is impossible to retail (re-tail) him." "How many sides are there to a tree?" "Two, inside and outside." Box label is hand colored. Includes instructions and 96 riddles. Cards in generally fine condition, instruction sheet split in half along vertical fold, but no losses to text, box has signs of discoloring and wear. -- Game of Dr. Busby , circa 1850/1860s, Henry P. Ives, Salem, MA, 20 hand-colored cards divided into four sets of five cards each set. The object of the game is to collect all cards in a set. One set is Dr. Busby and his family, identified by a drug pestle appearing in the upper right corner of the cards, another set depicts a pan of milk, the third set shows an eye, and the remaining set is a gardener and his staff with a mortar pestle in the upper right corner. Henry P. Ives was a successor to W. & S. B. Ives whose 1843 Dr. Busy game was America's first popular proprietary game. Hand-coloring of games started to disappear during the 1860s, replaced by hand-stenciling and chromolithography. Includes photocopy of rules for the 1843 version. Some slight foxing, otherwise cards are in generally fine condition. Original box has some wear. (2)
