Beschreibung:

'Tambourine Dancer', an unrecorded Clarice Cliff Bizarre flat wall plaque or charger, painted with a leaping dancer wearing a tiered costume and holding tambourines, on a side-to-side leaf and curves polychrome ground, black handpainted mark 'Bizarre by Clarice Cliff A. J. Wilkinson Ltd Newport Pottery Burslem', incised 'H', 44cm diameter Provenance: A private collection, Bristol See Green, Richard and Jones, Des 'The Rich Designs of Clarice Cliff' Bidford-on-Avon 1995, p. 218 (illustration p. 219) for a, perhaps, related flat plaque of 1933-34 given the title 'Yugoslavian Dancers' sold by Christie's 8th November 1984. This present example appears to be unrecorded and possibly unique. It has been suggested by several authorities that the handwritten mark is in the hand of Clarice Cliff raising the theory that Clarice herself painted this piece. The cataloguer wishes to thank the Clarice Cliff Collectors Club (Founded 1982) (claricecliff.com) in naming this piece and helping to catalogue this lot and to the secretary of The Clarice Cliff Collectors Club (claricecliff.co.uk) in certain clarification
