The first and second of these manuscripts are published with variations in The Poems of Algernon Charles Swinburne , Vol. III, 1905, pp.146-149. There are ten translations of poems by Villon in Swinburne's Poems and Ballads , Second and Third Series. Writing in The Athenaeum in 1878, Theodore Walts described these translations as 'marvellous, both for vitality and for closeness', remarking that Villon was the most concise of all French poets with a temperament 'the very opposite of Mr Swinburne's'. The 'Roundel' is a pathetic lament for a lost love, perhaps a reminder of Swinburne's thwarted passion for his cousin Mary Gordon. (3)
