SWAINSON, William (1789-1855). Exotic Conchology; or figures and descriptions of rare, beautiful, or undescribed Shells ... second edition, edited by Sylvanus Hanley. London: Norman for Henry G. Bohn, 1841 [plates watermarked 1820-1841]. 4° (303 x 238mm). 48 hand-coloured lithographic plates by Swainson, manuscript numbering to 26 plates. (Small hole to the 36th plate affecting image, light old creasing to plates 9 to 16, light spotting or browning to about 10 plates.) Contemporary cloth (spine faded). W. SWAINSON. Two sheets of unsigned original watercolours of shells with pencilled inscriptions in Swainson's hand, [no date but one sheet watermarked 'J Whatman 1822']. 2 sheets (280 x 205mm.), one with two views of one large shell with pencilled inscription '40 Cypraea Aurora Mr. Trevelyan', the second with six views of three smaller shells with pencilled inscriptions '994 Achatina Perversus 695 A. Pallida 696 A. Crenata'. (Slight damage to margins, not affecting image area). Second edition of 'ONE OF THE... MOST BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED WORKS ON SHELLS EVER PUBLISHED' (S. Peter Dance Shell Collecting , 1966, p. 125), WITH TWO SHEETS OF ORIGINAL WATERCOLOURS BY SWAINSON. The artist was unable to issue more than four parts of the first edition. A re-issue was published in 1834 with an additional 16 plates, and the present second edition, edited by Sylvanus Hanley (1819-1899) and published by Henry Bohn, appeared in 1841. Bohn made use of whatever remained of the earlier editions or issues -- thus the second plate of this work is on Whatman paper dated '1822' and was clearly printed as part of the original edition of 1821-1822. The plates include images from a number of well-known contemporary collections, including those of Elizabeth Bligh (1752-1812), Henry Constantine Jennings (1731-1819), Charles Dubois Mrs Angus, John Mawe, and W.J. Broderip. At least one of the sheets of original drawings seems to have been used by Swainson in the preparation of the plates for his Zoological Illustrations (3 volumes, London, 1820-1823). An examination of the Linnean Society's set of pattern plates for the work show that the sheet with drawings of three shells was used for plate numbers 36, 41 and 58. The very fine watercolour of the golden cowrie does not seem to have been reproduced. BM(NH) V, p. 2054; cf. Dance Shell Collecting 284; cf. Nissen ZBI 4049.
