'Surrey v Cambridgeshire 1861'. Original, scarce and very early presentation silk scorecard for the match played at the Kennington Oval on the 27th to 29th June 1861. Cambridgeshire beat Surrey by two wickets. Fully printed match details. Excellent printed vignette 'F. Lillywhite's Cricket Score' with scoring tent and players to sides to top border. The scorecard was presented to Henry Perkins the Captain of Cambridgeshire who was at the wicket when the winning runs were scored, by Frederick Lillywhite, presumably following the match, and there is an ink inscription to the lower half of the scorecard which reads 'Presented by Fred Lillywhite to H. Perkins Esq'. Some wear and small loss to side borders of the scorecard plus minor holes to the main body of the card otherwise in good condition. Attractively framed and glazed. 7.25"x9.25" overall. A signed presentation scorecard from Fred Lillywhite rarely seen
In a closely fought and unprecedented high scoring match, Cambridgeshire beat Surrey by two wickets. Surrey batted first and made 228 all out with Caesar top scoring with 50, Bell and Hayward taking seven of the Surrey wickets. In reply Cambridgeshire scored 329 with Robert Carpenter making 100 and Thomas Hayward 108, Sewell and Mortlock taking six wickets between them. In Surrey's second innings they made 259 with Caesar scoring 111, Bell and Hayward taking a further eight wickets between them. Cambridgeshire struggled to make the total required, but eventually with two wickets in hand they won the match with Hayward making 46, Sewell taking five wickets. Other players playing in this early match were Caffyn, Lockyer, Diver, Tarrant etc. Henry Perkins was an English lawyer, cricketer and cricket administrator. He played first-class cricket for Cambridge University, Cambridge Town Club (Cambridgeshire), Marylebone Cricket Club and various amateur sides between 1854 and 1868, and he was the secretary of the MCC from 1876 to 1898. Frederick Lillywhite , a member of the famous Sussex cricketing family, but made his name as a sports outfitter, publisher and cricketing entrepreneur. By the time he was 20 he had produced the first edition of The Guide To Cricketers which ran through to his death in 1866, a book which was loosely the forerunner of the more famous Wisden Cricketers' Almanack. In 1859 he accompanied George Parr's professional side on the groundbreaking tour to North America, fulfilling the role of scorer. He also took a tent and a mobile scoring wagon, and subsequently published the definite account of the trip. In 1862 he published Scores and Biographies, the first major work on the game in almost a century. , as well as scorecards of matches. He died in 1866 at the age of 37
