Collation: aa 4 a-z 8 & 8 A-R 8 S 6 (aa1 title, aa2r dedicatory letter by Beroaldus to Hannibal Bentivolus, aa3r Breviarum rerum memorabilium quae in commentario insunt , aa4r dedicatory letter by Sabellicus to Augustinus Barbadico, aa4v prologue by Sabellicus, a1r text and commentaries, S1r Life of Suetonius by Sabellicus, Life of Suetonius by Beroaldus, eulogy on Julius Caesar S1v Appendix Annotamentorum by Beroaldus dedicated to Bentivolus, S5r address to reader, epigrams by Ioannes Baptista and Ugerius Pontremulensis, colophon, printer's device (Kristeller 191), S5v register, S6 blank). 353 (of 354, without final blank) leaves. 62 lines of commentary surrounding text, and headline. Type: Haebler 19:105R (text); 18:80R b (commentary), 80 b Greek. Woodcut capitals, some 2- to 6-line initial spaces with guide-letters. (Some leaves browned, light dampstain in first few pages, lower corner of first leaf replaced affecting 3 letters.) Nineteeth-century mottled paper over pastepaper boards, leather spine label, red speckled edges). Provenance : inscriptions partly erased from title: Joh. Caspar Joh. Georgius ; a few later marginal annotations. Third edition with commentary by Beroaldus, here joined with that of Sabellicus, a member of Pomponius Laetus's Academy. Along with Plutarch, Suetonius was the great biographer of antiquity and his Lives of the Roman emperors have been used as source material for countless works ever since.
