As an early member of Diaghilev’s Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) group, Sudeikin was a prominent Russian painter and poster artist of the Silver Age. He is best known for his costumes and stage sets for the Ballets Russes, Chauve-Souris, Radio City Music Hall and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Among his lovers was the poet and novelist Mikhail Kuzmin. His first wife was the actress Olga Glebova (1885-1845); he left her for the dancer Vera de Bosset, who later deserted him and married the composer Igor Stravinsky. In 1922, Soudeikin emigrated to the United States where he continued to design posters and stage sets, including those for the original 1935 Metropolitan Opera production of George Gershwin’s American opera Porgy and Bess . N. N. Evreinov (1879-1953) was an influential Russian playwright, director and theatrical theorist associated with the Russian Symbolists.
