Lot of 14 stereoviews by M.M. Hazeltine, most bearing imprints from his studio in Baker City, Oregon, but some from his Pacific Coast, Oregon Short Line, and Union Pacific Railway series. Notables include a view of men net fishing on the Columbia River, two unidentified group shots of men who are probably miners, and two fine views of Canyon City and Oregon City, Oregon. Also six views of waterfalls and scenic landscapes in Oregon, one of Shoshone Falls in Idaho, and two of Niagara Falls. Martin Mason Hazeltine (1827-1903) worked as a photographer in Vermont, New York, and Illinois before emigrating to San Francisco with his brother George in 1853. They tried their hand at gold mining and opened a daguerreotype studio in San Francisco, which M.M. bought out from his brother before 1860. A prolific and adventurous photographer, Hazeltine operated out of dozens of towns in California, Nevada, Oregon, and Idaho, and took a particular interest in documenting the mining industry. He finally settled in Baker City toward the end of the century, but did make an excursion to the gold fields of Alaska before his death in 1903. His son Leland S. Hazeltine also became a photographer. Condition: Most with worn corners and light soiling. Prints lightly toned and some slightly faded, though the two town views are excellent with rich tones and great contrast.
