ST IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA (1491-1556). Autograph note unsigned [to Pope Paul III], n.p. [Rome], n.d. [March 1547], five lines of writing, in Italian, in brown ink, cancellation stroke from upper left margin, one page, 70 x 212 mm (browned, old dampstains mostly in upper right corner), mounted on the 2nd leaf of a bifolium (partially detached), including beneath the note an autograph authentication inscription signed by Jan Roothaan ('Gio. Roothaan d[ell]a C[ompagnIa] di Gesù'), Rome, 12 May 1841, 'Attestiamo essere la scrittura qui sopra della mano propria di St Ignazio di Loiola Fondatore della Comp[agni]a di Gesù'; blind-stamped seal of the Company of Jesus. Provenance . Ignatia, Gräfin Lützow (presentation inscription in an unidentified hand, signed 'M.R.' on first leaf, giving it to her on her nameday [31 July] in 1841).

St Ignatius and the Council of Trent: 'di poi che qua e tanto publico V[ostra] S[antita] habera intesa la mutacione delconcilio per bolonia, et forsam li n[ost]ri Sarano co[n] V[ostra] S[antita] q[ua]ndo que sta arrivara o dipoi in poqui giorni, il Sp[irit]u Sancto sia semp[re] in ogni cosa a la pr[esente] laude et gloria di la sua divina magesta' ('Since it is now so well known, Your Holiness will be aware of the transfer of the Council to Bologna, and perhaps our men will be with Your Holiness when this [letter] arrives or a few days later ...'). Ignatius de Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, was its first Superior General from 1541 to 1556. When the Council of Trent opened in December 1545, Pope Paul III (Alexander Farnese) enabled the Society to participate by inviting Loyola to select three members of the Order to attend as his theologian representatives. Jamie Lainez and Alfonso Salmeron reached Trent in May 1546 (the third delegate died before his departure) and they took part in the subsequent sessions of the Council when it adjourned to Bologna in March 1547. The Dutch Jesuit Jan Philip Roothaan (1785-1853) was elected as the 21st Superior General of the order in 1829. The Order was banished in 1773, and was permitted to return to Italy only in 1814.
