ST HELENA] - Three documents relating to the island, comprising: A letter signed by John Buttars to Sir Isaac Pyke (the Governor), London 11 December 1734, on arrangements for shipping cases of 'necessaries', with a list of goods including clocks, books, 'perukes', 'scorching irons', mathematical instruments, greatcoats, bows and arrows, and other personal items, 2 pages, folio , address panel (seal tears, browned, ink erosion, splits in folds); and two documents, a bill of sale, 19 November 1764, for 21½ acres of land on the island conveyed to Orlando Bagley for £365, 2 pages, folio , seals, endorsements (browned, splits in folds); and a 'Brief acc[oun]t of The Present State of St Helena', n.d. [circa 1690], in a late 17th-century hand, reporting on the fertility, fortifications and garrisons including a 'want of good officers', 3 pages, folio , contemporary endorsement on verso (slightly browned, a few ink blots); Isaac Pyke, governor from 1714, introduced reforms to check the mutinies and general unrest which marked the colony earlier. Descendants of Orlando Bagley, one of the island's principal inhabitants in the 18th-century, were landowners there as late as 1938. (3)
