This work is accompanied by certificates of authenticity from the Atelier Spyros Vassiliou and Kiki Vassiliou, the artist's wife. Painted in the artist's unmistakable style and peppered with delightful vignettes of people, scenes, and famous landmarks highly reminiscent of his monumental 1955 mural composition at the University of Thessaloniki, this work captures the enduring wonder of Greece. In the late 1940s and in the next two decades, the Greek National Tourism Organization commissioned a number of leading artists, including Y. Moralis, S. Vassiliou and P. Tetsis, to design posters that would promote Greece as a travel destination.1 Spyros Vassiliou the painter most often associated with this project, repeatedly created inspired compositions that were used in posters, brochures and leaflets. 1 See Greek Tourism Posters, a Journey through Art, Ministry of Culture and Tourism - Greek National Tourism Organisation, Athens 2007.
