Some Thoughts on Education: With Reasons for Erecting a College in this Province, and fixing the same at the City of New-York .
New York: James Parker 1752. Octavo (7 ¼ x 4 ½ inches, 180x110 mm). Modern boards. Condition: Foxing, terminal leaf in expert facsimile. Provenance : Abraham Keteltas (signature and early inked stamp on the title). first edition of an influential essay written during the controversy surrounding the founding of columbia university. “Except for a Memorial on Established Schools in Scotland, published in London in 1750, this is the first of one hundred or so pieces by Smith recorded in Sabin. Smith was then a young man of twenty-five who had only arrived in America the year before. This pamphlet joined many others in the controversy then raging which ended in the founding of King's College two years later” ( Streeter ). Upon reading Some Thoughts on Education , Benjamin Franklin hired Smith to become the Provost of the newly-formed University of Pennsylvania. This copy likely owned by Abraham Keteltas (1732-1798), who graduated from Yale in 1752, became the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Elizabethtown, NJ and during the American Revolution preached the Patriot cause. The pamphlet is quite rare, with only the Streeter copy appearing in the auction records from the last half century, where his copy sold for $1900. Evans 6935; Sabin 84672; Streeter Sale 4053.
