New York native Gerrit Smith, was one of the most prominent figures in the abolitionist movement. Born into a wealthy family, Smith began as a temperance campaigner, but that same strong moral conviction led him to take up the abolitionist cause in the 1830's. He ran for numerous political offices, including President in 1848, 1856 and 1860, and served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1853 to 1854. In 1846 he used his family's extensive land holdings in the Adirondacks to make land grants to free blacks, but ultimately he failed in his goal of creating a free black colony in Essex County, NY.
