Beschreibung:

A small Torah Scroll and a mantle. [Gibraltar, mid-19th century]. Ink on paper, wood, fabric. A small paper scroll, rolled as a Torah scroll on two “Atzei Haim”. Vowelized script. Includes the beginnings and endings of the Parashot (several verses from the beginning of the Parasha and a verse or two from its ending), Without the Book of Deuteronomy. Written in addition are “Shirat HaYam” and the Ten Commandments. A dedication opens the scroll: “BeSiman Tov UbeMazal Tov…” Two Piyutim follow the dedication: “David HaMelech…” and “Ashira KeShirat Moshe…” Two boys are mentioned in the dedication: David and Yossef born in 1843 and in 1847. The father of the boys, Yitzchak Nunis Kardozo, was, most probably, born in 1799 in Gibraltar, and was the consul of Tunisia and a wealthy man. The book is tied with a sash and covered with a Mantle, made of red and gold brocade with golden fringes. It seems that the book was presented to the boys as a birthday gift. It is also possible that the book was used for dances and Hakafot on Simchat Torah, and it might also have been used for reading the Torah on the eve of Simchat Torah according to the custom (of few congregations) to read on the eve of Simchat Torah the beginning and the ending of the Parashot, and several special Parashot [see: Avraham Yaari, Toldot Chag Simchat Torah, p.205]. Height of sheet: 17 cm, height of Atzei Haim: 30 cm. Good-fair condition. Adhesive tape, spotting, unraveled sheets. Fringes detached in several places. Holes on mantle.
