Title: Small collection of 9 books illustrated by Japanese-American artist Mine Okubo, 1947 - 1962 Author: Place: Publisher: Date: Description: Mine Okubo. Citizen 13660 (Columbia Univ. Press, 1947) Second Printing. 209pp. Original cloth binding, without Dust Jacket; and eight imprints of the Friendship Press, New York, 1949-1962, a liberal Christian publisher with special interest in Asian subjects, one hardback, the others soft-cover, all with colorful, Japanese-style cover designs and five also with text illustrations by Okubo. The Friendship Press imprints are William C. Kerr, Japan Begins Again (1949), Okubo Dust Jacket design; the paperbacks vary in size from 6 x 8” to 5 x 7”: Grace McGavran. Where the Carp Banners Fly (1949); Toru Matsumoto. Seven Stars (1949); Marianna and Norman Prichard, Ten Against the Storm (1957); Eleanor Hull. Suddenly The Sun, A Biography of Shizuko Takahashi (1957); Sumner Wood. Whose World? A Handbook of International Relations (1960); Peggy Billings The Waiting People [1962]; and Margaret Copland, Fun and Festival from the Rim of East Asia (1962). None of these titles appear in the Bibliography of Okubo’s work prepared for the Oakland Museum’s exhibition of her work (see 1972 listing below for the exhibition catalogue with original sketch by the artist). Lot Amendments Condition: The Kerr book Dust Jacket has some wear and tear but the Jacket illustration is largely intact. The lightly-worn paperbacks have various ownership signatures and stamps.
