Beschreibung:

Lot of 6 CDVs. A vignette of a youthful private uniformed in what appears to be a shell jacket but details are obscured. Back mark of "Alexander, Fairfax C.H., Va." Copy shot of a probable artilleryman with likely brass crossed cannon insignia pinned to his pork-pie hat. No imprint. Carte undoubtedly showing a young infantry private wearing an open nine button frock without piping. A penciled notation on verso gives the origin "from an Indiana Album." Carte by "Morse & Pease, Nashville." CDV of fellow that appears to be wearing an officer's frock coat although no shoulder straps are visible. Back mark is "Peplow & Balch, Memphis, Tenn." CDV likely showing a heavy artilleryman outfitted in a non-regulation frock coat over military vest. His pork-pie hat has a brass numeral "3" over small crossed cannon. Image is credit to "Baum & Burdine, Washington, D.C." The Washington Defenses were stripped of their heavy artillery to reinforce Grant's Overland Campaign in May 1864, although the verso bears a later blue-green revenue stamp. Carte of gaunt looking officer with grand pompadour wearing non-regulation frock coat sporting small version shoulder straps possibly with captain's insignia. Photographed by "Morse's Gallery, Nashville, Tenn." The Richard B. Cohen Civil War Collection Cowan's is pleased to offer an unparalleled assembly of Brown Water Navy images archived over a lifetime of study by consummate collector Richard B. Cohen, a familiar name to many in the field of Civil War photography. To those who knew him best, Richard B. Cohen will be remembered as a "disciplined collector who maintained a relatively narrow focus having built an important, perhaps unsurpassed collection in his area of specialization." Richard was particularly well read and his historical knowledge informed his collecting as reflected by the photography that follows. The array of carte-de-visites and albumen photographs gathered here include a number of identified naval officers - both famous and obscure - along with a handful of enlisted sailors. It is supremely evident that Richard B. Cohen's collecting instincts were always evolving, but uniformly refined. We trust that both advanced and neophyte collectors will find something to pique interest now that the time has come to inevitably recycle these exceptional images to a new cadre of aficionados. Provenance:The Richard B. Cohen Civil War Collection Condition: No. 1 is light in soft focus with minor toning having marginally more wear, G. No. 2 shows moderate edge wear with soiling on mount, G. No.'s 3, 4, 5, and 6 are VG. or better.
