London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1907-1914. 3 volumes, 4° (275 x 210mm). Titles in red and black (vols. I-II), text and title in ochre and blue (vol.III), plates and illustrations, some chromolithographic, after Herbert Ponting Edward Wilson and others. (Occasional very light spotting to first or last few leaves.) Original blue cloth, spines lettered in gilt, the upper covers with gilt lettering and rope-work surrounding centrally-placed inset pictorial cloth panels, g.e., dust-jackets (head and foot of spine of dust-jacket of vol. I neatly repaired with six characters supplied in manuscript facsimile). PROVENANCE: Miss Langston (2pp. ALS from R.F. Scott to 'Dear Miss Langston', on 56, Oakley Street headed paper, dated 31 March, mentioning that 'It has been decided to reproduce a limited number of copies of the South Polar Times (I think 300)' and suggesting that she writes to Smith, Elder if she wished to subscribe. The letter ends with Scott's thanks for Miss Langston's 'kind remarks concerning the expedition'). A VERY FINE SET, WITH THE EXTREMELY RARE DUST-JACKETS, OF THIS CORNERSTONE TO ANY COLLECTION OF PRINTED WORKS ON ANTARCTIC EXPLORATION. Volumes I and II are both from the limited edition of 250 copies, these copies numbered 154. Volume III is from an edition limited to 350 copies, this copy numbered 98. The South Polar Times was an exact reproduction of the original which appeared month by month during the winters of 1902 and 1903, edited by Sir Ernest Shackleton and Louis Bernacchi, with articles, stories, poems and drawings supplied by various members of the British National Antarctic Expedition of 1901-1904, and, edited by Cherry-Garrard, with contributions from members of the British Antarctic Expedition of 1910-1913.
