SIMPSON, William (1823-1899). The Seat of War in the East ... First [ Second ] Series . London: Day & Son for Paul & Dominic Colnaghi & Co, 1855-6. 2 volumes in one, 2° (550 x 368mm). Lithographic titles with hand-coloured vignettes, lithographic dedication to Queen Victoria, 79 hand-coloured tinted lithographic plates, heightened with gum arabic, by E. Walker J. Needham and others after Simpson, printed by Day & Son, 36 plates with facing reduced copies in outline with key to names and places, volume II with letterpress text. (Some light spotting, mainly marginal, notably affecting first title, dedication and small areas of about 5 plates, second title trimmed to margins and inlaid to size, a few plates trimmed slightly at lower edge.) Contemporary red morocco gilt, the covers with wide decorative borders elaborately tooled in gilt with fillets, and foliate and floral tools, spine in 7 compartments with green morocco lettering piece, gilt edges (some very light scuffing to lower corners and edges). A DE LUXE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION WITH FINE COLOURED PLATES. Simpson's work is impressive 'not only artistically and technically, but also as pictorial reporting' (Abbey). He had been commissioned by the Colnaghis to go to Sebastopol and the resulting work, which earned him the name 'Crimean Simpson', records events at the height of the Crimean war, from September 1854 to the battle of Tchernaya in August 1855. Both series were originally issued in 10 parts, with plain or coloured plates. As Abbey notes, when complete, the First Series was made available at a price of £6.12s for plain copies and £10.12s for coloured copies. In December 1856 the folio volumes of both series which remained in the publisher's hands were offered at auction, with the promise that 'the lithographic stones of which will be destroyed in the presence of the Purchasers, thus supplying security against any future increase in the work, and rendering it certain that its value must be greatly augmented by the scarcity that will naturally occur.' Abbey Travel 237.
