Lot of 7. General Land Office Mineral Certificate, No.333, dated April 20, 1881, 10 x 16 in., 3pp, issued to Almon H. Rondebush for land at the Burton Place Mine in the state of Colorado. Secretarially signed on behalf of President James A. Garfield by "Wm H. Crook." Col. William H. Crook (1839-1915) served five administrations but is best known for serving as one of President Lincoln's bodyguards. During President Garfield's brief administration Crook served in many roles, including as secretary to sign land grants. "California Golden Jubilee" printed invitation, 6 x 8 in., 1p., with request for attendance at a January 24-29 [1898] event commemorating the 50th anniversary of the discovery of gold in California. Invitation features embossed gold lettering and an illustration titled "Marshall Discovering Gold." Albumen photograph, 5.25 x 4.25 in., showing a man standing next to large white bags two with $100 visible on bag exterior, and verso text handwritten in pen "Shipment of Silver Dollars S. F. Mint - Via - Wells Fargo." Undated photograph housed in 7 x 5 in. acrylic encasement. Albumen photograph, 7.5 x 4.5 in. matted to 10.75 x 7 in., showing a group of nine men. Handwritten text below image identifies each man according to a corresponding number. Photographer identified on verso as F. C. Fryett of Silver City, NM. Albumen photograph, 9.25 x 7 in. matted to 12 x 9.5 in., showing a man along the edge of a river bed with the caption "Washing Gold / Vancouver, British Columbia." Albumen photograph, 6.75 x 4.75 in. matted to 9 x 7 in., showing three men posed in front of what appears to be a small mining operation at an unidentified location. Verso has penciled text which reads "S. M. S. M. Co. / B.V. / H.P.M." Small circular, 4.25 x 4 in. on lightweight yellow paper with the prominent headline "GOLD!!" followed by an image of Shakespeare's head and an inducement for the bearer of the circular to bring old books into the local bookstore: "'Yellow Precious Glittering Gold' / Timon of Athens. / Given for Old Books at Shakspear's [sic] Head, Mansion House, Cor. Fayette and St. Paul Streets, Baltimore." Provenance:Property from the Inventory of Rex Stark Condition: Photograph of group of nine men has large dampstain on upper right corner and extensive foxing on right side of image. Entire image toned with wear along edges. Small tear upper left corner on bookstore circular and folds at bottom edge line and diagonally across.
