SHAFTESBURY, Anthony Ashley Cooper, Third Earl of. Characteristicks of Men, Manners, Opinions, Times , Birmingham: John Baskerville 1773. 3 volumes, 8°, engraved portrait frontispiece by S. Gribelin after I. Closterman, engraved title vignettes and head-pieces after the same (A 4 - 5 in vol. I misbound before title, a few leaves towards the end of vol. II lightly browned), early 19th-century red morocco by C. Lewis [junior] with his blind stamp, double gilt rule, spine gilt with raised bands, black and brown morocco lettering-pieces and floreated tooling (joints lightly rubbed, small stain to spine of vol. III), gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, g.e. Provenance : Henry Gee Barnard, bookplate dated 1839. "Fifth" edition. Gaskell 49. (3)
