Beschreibung:

Ɵ Section from a Caucasian Qur'an, in Arabic, illuminated manuscript on paper [probably Daghistan, first half of eighteenth century (apparently dated 1153 AH (1740 AD)]single volume, 29 leaves, containing text from Surah Maryam (19:1) to Al-Anbya (21:112) followed by a leaf of devotional prayers, lacking one leaf in the final surah (21:79 - 21:89), else complete as intended with 3 Surah section of Qur'an, single column, 9 lines of stylised bold and slightly elongated naskh, opening two leaves with elaborate arabesque headings decorated with red and green designs of notable East Asian influence, surah headings in outline against red, green and blue banners with ornamental devices extending into the border, verse markers throughout in gilt, red and black rosettes formed of clustered dots, catchwords throughout, two lines of colophon at the end of final Surah (fol. 28v) probably added in a later hand, leaves rather stained in places, some margins and small tears repaired with later manuscript facsimile where damage affecting text, occasional offsetting, 380 by 290 mm.; modern leather over pasteboards, covers painted with Ottoman-style medallions in gold, ruled in blind, slight scuffing else attractive and cleanAn important witness to the scarcely documented tradition of Islamic calligraphy and manuscript production in the CaucasusThe colophon at the end of the final surah of this manuscript identifies a completion date of the first of Shawwal 1170 AH (1740 AD) and places the manuscript in St Petersburg, naming the scribe as Turkhan bin Ahmad. However, this small section appears to have been copied in a different hand form the body of the text, and is perhaps a later addition. The manuscript in fact shows remarkable similarities in the style of calligraphy and illumination to Daghistani manuscripts, from the southern-most regions of Russia, produced in the eighteenth-century. The bold and confident letters and arabesque patterns compare closely to a group of Daghistani Qur'anic texts held in the British Library (see the collection of Ali al-Ghumuqi, Or. 15955, Or. 16127 and Or. 16771 among others). These features draw heavily on East Asian influences and are often mistaken for South-East Asian manuscripts, for more details on manuscripts from this region see: A. T. Gallop 'From Caucasia to Southeast Asia: Daghistani Qur'ans' (Manuscript Orientalia, 14, 2008).A strange feature of the present manuscript is the use of three consecutive surahs that operate independently from the traditional divisions of the Qur'an. The three Surah present here neither form a complete Juz' or two Hizb.
