Scottish interest – A George II sterling silver teapot, London 1734 by Thomas Parr II (reg. 9th Feb 1733) Of spherical “bullet” form upon a spreading circular foot, the cast octagonal spout opposite a later ebonised C scroll handle pinned to scroll sockets. The hinged domed lid surmounted by a compressed knop finial. The side with engraved quartered coat of arms within a circular cartouche surrounded with a flat chased architrave surmounted by two baskets of fruits, flanked by foliate S scrolls and garlands of fruit, all reserved with rustication. The surround of the lid with a flat chased band of foliate scrolls and roundels all reserved with rustication, all quartered with stylised acanthus leaves. Engraved underneath with contemporaneous scratch weight Zo – dW over 11=14. Fully marked underneath, the lid with a lion passant only. Length – 19.6 cm / 7.75 inches Weight – 362 grams / 11.64 ozt The arms are for Erskine quartering Mar as borne by the Earl’s of Mar for Thomas Erskine, Lord Erskine (1705-1766), son of John Erskine, 6th Earl of Mar (1675-1732) who was issued a writ of attainder for his role in the 1716 Jacobite rebellion. The sixth Earl of Mar was bestowed with the Jacobite title of Duke of Mar by titular King James III and VIII (of Scotland. Created Duke of Mar, Marquess Erskine or Marquess of Stirling, Earl of Kildrummie, Viscount of Garioch, and Lord Alloa, Ferriton and Forrest in the notional Peerage of Scotland in 1715. He was also created Earl of Mar in the Peerage of England in 1717 and Duke of Mar in the Peerage of Ireland in 1722. Although these titles, with an ordinary remainder to heirs male of the body, became extinct after his son's death in 1766. His son Thomas, forbid the title Earl of Mar, devoted his time to the study of Freemasonry and was elected Grand Master Mason of Scotland in 1749, also Sovereign Grand Commander of the Order of the Fleur de Lys from 1746 to 1757. He married on the 1st October 1741, Charlotte Hope (1720-1788), daughter of the Charles Hope, 1st Earl of Hopetoun (1681-1742) and Lady Henrietta Johnstone (1682-1750), only daughter, by his first wife of William [Johnstone], 1st Marquess of Annandale (1663 – 1720). He died without issue. The title Earl of Mar was restored in 1824 for John Francis Erskine (1741-1825) 7th Earl, grandson from his second marriage of the 6th Earl.
