SCOTLAND -- SKINNER, WILLIAM.
SCOTLAND -- SKINNER, WILLIAM. A plan of Fort George, North of Britain...1763. Designed and Exec'd by W. Skinner Chief Engineer. Manuscript plan of the newly constructed Fort George, 11 miles East of Inverness, ink and wash on paper, 540 x 760mm. Title and index set at upper left corner, scale bar along lower margin, the plan in black outline, with green, blue, pink, sepia and brown bodycolour, verso blank. A fine manuscript plan of one of the largest military forts of Scotland built to pacify the Scottish Highlands in the aftermath of the 1745 Jacobite uprising. The First Fort George on the river Ness near Inverness was built in 1727 and blown up by the Jacobites in 1746. In 1747 William Skinner the King's Military engineer for North Britain, was given a contract to rebuild the fortress and land on the Moray Firth was selected. Work began in 1748, and by 1752 the main defences were in place. The Fort was finally completed in 1769. The budget was £92,000 but the final cost rose to £200,000 (larger thatn the GNP of Scotland in 1750). The fort, covering 42 acres, became a base for the highland regiments recruited from the clans.
