Title vignettes and illustrations, 100 hand-coloured lithographic plates by J.Smit and after J.Wolf, J.Smit and others, printed by M. & N.Hanhart. Near-contemporary brown half morocco gilt by Bumpus Ltd., spines in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second and third compartments, the others with double-fillet borders, t.e.g. (spines very slightly faded). Provenance : Sir David Lionel Salomons, Bart. (Broomhill, Tunbridge Wells, circular armorial bookplate). THE FINE SALOMONS SET OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THIS BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED WORK. The plates were prepared under the supervision of Sir Victor Alexander Brooke (1843-1891) by Joseph Wolf (who provided many of the drawings) and lithographed by J.Smit. Unfortunately Sir Victor died before he was able to prepare the requisite text. Sclater was given access to the manuscript and, in partnership with Oldfield Thomas (who provided the synonymy and scientific descriptions), saw the work through the presses.
