SCHOUTEN, WILLEM CORNELISZOON]. Paris: chez M. Gobert et M. Tavernier [maps], 1619. 12mo, red morocco, covers and spine gilt, g.e., by W. Pratt a few nicks to head of spine and upper edge of upper cover, slight spotting to the folding map of the Mer du Sud (facing p. 72), one or two microscopic marginal wormholes . FIRST PARIS EDITION, second issue, with the date on the title-page changed from 1618 and most of the pagination errors corrected, 4 folding maps and 4 folding engraved plates, woodcut head-piece and initials. "This is the account of Schouten's voyage around the world, during which Cape Horn, named after Schouten's native town, was discovered, and first rounded...Several of the maps are of great importance for the history of Pacific cartography. The northern coast of New Guinea was revealed and charted for the first time with some definiteness of detail."-- Hill, pp. 269-70. The maps and plates, including Schouten's twin-hemisphere world map (Shirley 299), are reduced imitations, the latter in reverse, of those of the first edition (first issue), Amsterdam 1618, published simultaneously in Dutch and French by Willem Jansz Blaeu, who probably compiled the work from the log books of the voyage. Sabin 77953; Alden 619/118. Provenance : José Rodriguez (sale, Parke-Bernet, 20 March 1951, lot 329).
