M. J. Friedländer confirmed the attribution to Lucas van Leyden and suggested an execution date of around 1520 (written communication, 22 November 1957, in copy). The present panel may have been part of a larger altarpiece, and repeats a subject found in Netherlandish painting of the first half of the sixteenth century, as may been seen in Jan Joest’s 1508 Kalkar Altarpiece, and DirkVellert’s print of 1523, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. no. RP-P-H-Z-225). Peter van den Brink suggests the work may be a version by a Netherlandish artist after a lost Lucas van Leyden original, with an execution date of circa 1530.
